September
FALL SEEDING

Fall Seeding

September is a perfect month to aerate and overseed tall turf fescue lawns.  If you haven't already done so, kill off any unsightly weeds in your  turf with a non-selective herbicide (be sure to follow the manufactures recommendations on the label).  Before aerating, mow the turf as low as possible, remove the clippings and dethatch any problem areas.  Aerating the turf provides the root systems access to air and other nutrients which is a must for our clay soil in this area.  We recommend a criss cross pattern to create more core plugs per square foot.  Follow these important steps:

1.  Purchase a blend of tall turf fescue; this will introduce a variety of fescue to your lawn for a richer and healthier turf.

2.  Over seed with approximately 6 pounds of seed per 1000 square feet of turf.

3.  Apply a starter fertilizer at the manufacturer's recommended rate.  A composition similar to 18-24-12 works well to develop strong root systems.

4.  Finally, WATER!!!!  For best germination results, water multiple times per day for short amounts of time versus random deep watering.
